Description
Roon Overview
Roon is a workstation for playing music. It consists of several key elements, each of which is a combination of standard hardware and a special software environment.
Roon Features
1. Core (Roon Core). This is a regular laptop or Windows or Mac PC, the one you use to work or have fun at home, but with Roon software installed. This is very clever software that is not limited to start/stop/rewind buttons, displaying an album picture or connecting to the TIDAL Internet service. It has its own music metadata storage, music suggestion “artificial intelligence”, a software digital signal processor, a resampler, a crossfeed headphone surround processor, and much more. Upon user request, Roon provides full information about how a music file is processed on its way through Roon to the playback device.
In addition to Windows and Mac, Roon Core can be installed on other platforms, such as Linux, on a NAS (network attached storage) or on a specialized NUC-type server with Roon OS.
Roon Core is paid software that is distributed on an annual subscription basis.
2. Remote. This is a remote control program. It runs on Windows, OS X or macOS hardware, as well as on Apple and Android mobile devices as a mobile application, from where it controls the core on any platform. The base microcode for all remote control applications is identical, so it works the same on all operating systems.
The remote also controls all AirPlay-compatible audio devices. The software is free, and multiple remote controls can control one core.
3. Output or endpoint. Roon’s output can be “loaded” to a Roon Ready audio device (a media player or other network (LAN) device). Roon Ready means that
– the device is connected to a local network (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet LAN);
– the device’s firmware contains the standard Roon microcode (RAAT SDK) for exchanging information with the Roon Remote and the Roon Core server.
The Roon Ready certificate is issued by Roon to audio equipment manufacturers that have met these requirements. The Roon Ready certificate guarantees bit-perfect playback of music content received via the Roon Core.
Multiple outputs can be connected to one core. This is the software-based multi-room or multi-zone sound system.
Additional information : In this version, all streaming services (Tidal, Qobuz), adding radio stations and searching through the media library do not work
. The assembly is used only as a local player. The distribution includes versions for Windows (x64), macOS (x64, arm), linux (x64), ROCK (CSM and UEFI), Synology NAS (DSM6, DSM7), Android (client .apk).
That’s all. There will be no versions for other platforms (Qnap…)/architectures (x86, arm…).
Installation
Windows:
- Install Roon via RoonInstaller64.exe or RoonBridge via RoonBridgeInstaller64.exe.
- After installation, close Roon, RoonServer, RoonBridge and RAATServer.
- Run the appropriate patch installer:
RoonInstaller64-patch-installer.exe
RoonBridgeInstaller64-patch-installer.exe - In the patch installer, select the directory of the installed application, if you changed it during installation, and wait for it to complete.
The patch installer installs only the patch. The original installers are preserved without renaming.
Linux:
Unzip the corresponding archive and install it in the usual Roon way:
- RoonServer_linuxx64.roonffa-patched.tar.bz2
- RoonBridge_linuxx64.roonffa-patched.tar.bz2
- RoonBridge_linuxarmv7hf.roonffa-patched.tar.bz2
- RoonBridge_linuxarmv8.roonffa-patched.tar.bz2
The archives are already patched.
macOS:
Unzip the ZIP and move the application to /Applications.
If macOS reports that the app is corrupted or cannot be opened, remove the quarantine flag:
Code:sudo xattr -cr /Applications/Roon.app
sudo xattr -cr /Applications/RoonBridge.app
After this, launch the application in the usual way.
ROCK:
- rock/ROCK_*.roonffa-patched.img.gz — full factory-reset image only for ROCK-supported x86_64 Intel NUCs.
- First, backup your Roon database. Burning the image and then installing ROCK will erase the data from the selected USB drive and NUC system drive.
- Burn the .img.gz file directly to a USB drive using balenaEtcher and install ROCK according to the official instructions.
- This image is intended for a fresh install/factory reset, not for updating a running ROCK.
Android:
Install RoonMobile.roonffa-patched.apk. If the official RoonMobile is already installed, you may need to uninstall it before installing due to a different APK signature.
Synology DSM7:
- This package is only for Synology x86_64 with DSM 7.
- Back up your Roon database (optional), then install synology/RoonServer_Synology_DSM7_x86_64_.roonffa-patched.spk manually via Package Center.
- If DSM asks for permission, enable installation of third-party packages.
- In the wizard, select a separate shared folder for the Roon database and a shared folder for music. The package itself contains a patched Roon Server.
QNAP
- This package is only for QNAP x86_64 with QTS/QuTS 5 or later and glibc 2.28 or later.
- Make a backup copy of the Roon database, then install qnap/RoonServer_QNAP_x86_64_.roonffa-patched.qpkg manually via App Center.
- If App Center blocks an unsigned package, use its settings to allow installation of apps without a valid digital signature.
- On a new installation, the default database is stored in Public/RoonFFA/RoonOnNAS.
- If the service reports an old glibc, this native QPKG is incompatible with the firmware; use Roon Server in Container Station.
