Description
ANSYS FreeFlow Overview
Ansys FreeFlow is a fluid flow simulation software using the smoothed particle method (SPH). It is designed to solve complex problems of modeling free-surface flows, interfacial interactions, and highly deformable fluids.
ANSYS FreeFlow Features
– Preprocessor:
Allows you to define the physical domain, boundaries, and initial conditions. For example, you can create static boundaries (tank walls) and moving objects (turbine blades). You can specify motion or rotational velocity so that objects interact directly with the flow.
-Creating inlets and outlets
For example, you can define a continuous inlet for water supply, specifying a flow rate or velocity profile, and include an outlet at the bottom of the domain for runoff.
-Volume inlets for initialization
Useful for filling the initial domain with fluid particles, ensuring constant interparticle spacing and initial density.
-Material Properties
You can assign fluid density, viscosity type and artificial sound speed (to control compressibility in SPH).
– Built-in post-processing
allows you to analyze and present results directly, without exporting to external tools. Some features:
– Variable-based visualization – display fluid colored by velocity, pressure, density, or other user-defined scalar fields.
– Slice planes – allow you to slice through the 3D particle field to reveal internal flow structures.
– Vectors – select to view vectors from the SPH plane, allowing you to visualize flow direction.
Automation and customization are available through the Solver SDK (Software Development Kit) and PrePost Scripting. For example, the SPH Freeze Outside Region module freezes SPH elements outside regions and disables interaction calculations, saving resources and reducing simulation time.
Examples of use
Ansys FreeFlow is used for modeling, for example:
Flows in a stirred tank with continuous inlets and outlets. The model allows for defining moving boundaries and inlet and outlet conditions, visualizing particle-based flow fields and dynamics.
Modeling fluid-structure interactions. For example, the influence of turbines on fluid flow can be studied using visualization tools and analysis of internal flow structures.
